To measure surface roughness, a sensor is placed directly onto the material’s surface and moved uniformly across it using an internal drive mechanism within the tester. As the sensor travels, a sharp built-in probe detects variations in the surface texture. These variations cause the probe to displace, altering the inductance in nearby coils and generating an analog signal that corresponds to the surface roughness. This signal is then processed by a phase-sensitive rectifier and analyzed by a dedicated digital signal processor (DSP), which calculates and displays the measurement results on an LCD screen.
